While our homes are somewhere we traditionally think of a being a place to relax and recuperate; we also need to stay in control of them.  It’s all too easy for your home to become run down, cluttered or even infested with bugs. That is why it’s essential to stay in control of your home. Here’s how to do it.

Maintenance

Making sure you keep on top of home maintenance is essential to staying in control of your living quarters. Check and repairs need to be done at regular intervals, not just as a firefighting exercise.

Pay particular attention to window frames. They are prone to catch the condensation that drips from the window pane and can go rotten or harbor mold.

If you have wooden frames, make sure that you check them each season.  Then refinish and seal them, if you can see that they are not looking their best.

Keeping your windows on draft will help to minimize mold collection in the frames. Also use a cleaner with bleach to remove any mold that is already present. Regularly treat to ensure that it doesn’t come back.

Decoration

A beautiful home is a happy home, and it’s certainly true that living in pleasant surroundings can have a positive effect on your mood. But it’s easy not to notice when things become run down if you are constantly in a space. We can get used to things being the way that they are, and then put off the need to spruce them up and redecorate.

However, it is worth putting a bit of effort into the look of your home. Refresh painted walls every few years, even if you don’t want to change the color. A fresh coat of paint will make everywhere look brighter and cleaner.

Invest in a professional carpet cleaning once a year. They are not expensive and can make an old carpet come up like new.

Pests

Pests are not something most homeowners like to think about. But they are something that many homeowners will have to deal with at some point. From a lone mouse to an army of sugar ants, any pest infestation can severely disrupt your life and put your home and loved ones at risk.

Pests need to be dealt with on a type by type basis. How to get rid of sugar ants, is not necessarily the way in which to deal with wasps or rodents. If you are concerned at the level of infestation, call a professional to make an assessment before you act.

Utility bills

Another thing that can out of control very fast when running a home is the costs of the utility bills. If you are not actively monitoring how much your are using, then it’s very easy for your bills to become sky high.

A good way of dealing with that is to have meters installed for your gas, electric and water use. Then it’s much easier to keep an eye on what is being used. It also acts as a good motivator in being more economical with your utilities. Prompting you to turn off lights when you leave the room or shut off the tap while you’re brushing your teeth.
